Home adaptations and aids

The Home Independence Service is a non-profit making service, which provides information and advice on equipment that helps people maintain or improve their independence at home.

You can buy a range of equipment directly from any of our five shops located around the county. The service is staffed by occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants and sensory support workers who are all happy to give advice and information.

Please note, due to unforeseen circumstances the Bishop Auckland Home Independence Shop will be temporarily closed until further notice.

Alternatively, if you would like to see if you are entitled to any help from Durham County Council to support your independence, please go to our Self assessment page.

Please note that due to the VAT increase and some supplier costs there has been an increase in the published selling prices.

For further information on how we can help please see our  PDF IconHome Independence Service.pdf (4 pages, 973kb) leaflet.
