
South Stanley Wood
About the Site
South Stanley Wood is an ancient woodland site where oak is the most common species. Other trees include sycamore, birch, ash, larch, beech, Scots pine and poplar. Alder, hawthorn, elder, hazel and bird cherry can be found in the shrub layer. The ground flora is varied with ferns, bluebell, greater stitchwort, yellow pimpernel, toothwort and red campion.A number of insects and butterflies including the large skipper butterfly can be found in the wood.
The site is well used by local people and is an interesting example of semi-natural woodland.
